One of the best ways to make cats feel safe, happy and loved is through daily enrichment. This means simple, thoughtful activities that support their natural behaviours and keep them mentally and physically engaged.

Whether at home or in a shelter environment, enrichment plays a crucial role in a cat’s overall wellbeing.

So what little things can you do at home to keep your kitty stimulated and enriched? Take a look below at five easy options that your cat will love.

Hide treats

A great place to start is with treat trails. Hiding small, healthy treats around your cat’s space encourages them to explore and activates their natural hunting instincts. It’s a fun, low-stress way to get them moving and thinking.

For shy or nervous cats, gentle enrichment is key. A technique called ‘picnicking’ works well. Simply place a few tasty treats in their safe space or enclosure and leave them alone to enjoy. This helps build trust without overwhelming them.

Keep toys interesting

Another fun way we keep things fresh for the cat is through daily toy rotation. Swapping toys daily keeps the environment fresh and interesting.

Some cats prefer soft toys, while others like crinkly or textured ones. Paying attention to what your cat responds to helps personalise their playtime.

Encourage problem-solving

You can also use food puzzles to keep cats busy and thinking. Solving puzzles to get treats, mimics natural hunting behaviour and helps reduce stress and boredom, making mealtime more fun and rewarding.

Appeal to their sense of smell

Scent enrichment is another favourite. Make scent boxes using grass, herbs or other safe items that bring new smells into their space.

You can also occasionally use catnip or calming pheromone sprays (at a distance and in moderation) to introduce new, soothing smells.

Get involved in playtime!

When your cat feels comfortable and ready, interactive play is a great way to bond. Feather wands or ribbon toys can encourage movement and bring joy.

These simple enrichment activities might seem small, but they go a long way in supporting your cat’s health, happiness and confidence every single day.

What are some of your favourite activities to do with your cat? leave us a comment below!

  • Our cat is essentially an indoors only cat, so really only gets stimulation from its humans or things around the house.
Especially when the kids are on school holidays, I encourage them to play with Rusty and interact with him, rather than spending all day on their screens.
Aldi regularly have pet toys and feeding trays on special, so this is a good way to pick up inexpensive items to change up the routine.

  • Definitely keep toys on a rotation system. Put their current ones away for a week and bring out some different ones!

  • We are very slowly trying to gain the acceptance of a Rescue Cat called Crumpet, who came to us very frightened and untrusting. Something nasty must have happened to her as a kitten. We are now able to pat her as she walks past. She will allow me to pat her while she sleeps, so she always receives a Good Morning Pat & A Good Night Pat. She is craving attention but still very timid. We love Crumpet to bits, so hopefully we will be able to let her know that we have no intentions of hurting her. It’s a very slow process

  • Love these ideas! We have an older cat, so he is getting a little lazy haha. Will be hiding treats from now on

  • I am loving the idea of hiding treats! I have never thought of doing something like that! I would love to give that a try – sounds like a lot of fun. I am also keen to maybe buy a food puzzle for her.

  • Cats love nothing more than just a good sunbake but let’s face it, they also love some toys that can keep them occupied too and encourage some movement. They’re smart animals and with natural hunting instincts like the article says.
