Hello!

My kids have a medium-sized fish tank (mostly goldfish) – why does the tank go cloudy so fast? Any tips on keeping tank water clear without constant cleaning?

  • Assuming that the fish are getting over fed here that is causing the murky water. Investing in a water filtration system would definitely help as well and save time on cleaning out the tank so often. I hope you find your answer. Good luck!

  • Keeping an eye on how much the fish are being fed. Overfeeding can really cause a cloudy unpleasant environment

  • I never had much luck with Fish Tanks over the years. We tried a few times but always seemed to kill the poor things and had the same problem. I agree with many below as I was always told that I was feeding them too much. I’d ask advice when buying the food. Take a photo of the size tank and how many/types of fish ready to discuss it with them.

  • I always had this problem aswell when we had fish. I found that we needed to change small amounts of water more frequently. I think a filter would have helped. Maybe a different food? Good luck

  • Worth getting a water filter in and monitor the feeding is not over done. Also great to introduce some great animals that help ‘clean’ eat up the stuff in the water or fresh and live plants.

  • Agree with the previous comments about overfeeding (something I am terrible for!) Snails and brisslenoses are also great for keeping the tank clear for longer.

  • Have you checked the ph ammonia and nitrate levels in your tank? if it’s not food related it could be an imbalance of something ? Does it have a filter system? If so Are you changing out filters monthly?

  • Overfeeding, resulting in lots of leftover food in the water, can cause cloudiness. Overfeeding also leads to lots of poo…..more cloudiness

  • Check up on the kids they are probably overfeeding the fish or possible dropping something into the water

  • Yep, I agree with comment already made. Over feeding can cause cloudiness

  • Make sure you’re not overfeeding your fish – uneaten food often causes cloudiness.
