Hello!

Me again….. i work long hours atm but once home the kids and i spend all arvo playing with the puppy. He has loads of different toys, chew things, interactive puzzles. He has gone thru 2 back door mats, a couch cushion and has started chewing his wooden kennel…. hoping that is it.
We play with him before we go to work, hide treats on the lawn for him to find.. give him bones.. nothing… help…
Also, training… how can we start from scratch to get him to come when called. He ran half way down the road today and wouldnt listen..

  • Isn’t the puppy stage fun?! Don’t worry it will pass but be careful not to leave anything expensive or dangerous around. My mum has a chew loving puppy and so far she’s destroyed my dad’s super expensive hearing aids and gotten into a bottle of vit d tablets. Thankfully she was fine and the vet cleared her but it was an expensive visit.
I definitely recommend buying a camera with an audio so that you can occasionally check in on your puppy during the day. There are so many different chew products out there so you’ve just got to find the one that will work for you. Some people find antlers are great for long lasting chews and others find smearing puppy peanut butter inside toys help keep them busy for longer. With regards to training you really don’t want to give any opportunity for poor behaviour. So a long lead would be best. Any time your puppy displays a positive behaviour label it and REWARD IT. It doesn’t matter what it is. If you like it and want more of it just a simple ‘good dog’ or a pat will help them learn what you want from them.
We did so many classes and this is the best lesson we ever learnt.
If your dog looks at you, say ‘look’ good dog.
If your pup comes to you say something like ‘good come’
Eventually your pup will pick up on the phrases and will know what behaviours you want. It really does work!
    Good luck

  • It sounds like boredom and sore puppy teeth. I would suggest rotating toys and ensuring you have a different chew safe toy out each day – a long toy frozen with treats is a great one or a rope toy soaked and frozen in bone broth.

  • In my experience he will eventually outgrow the craziness and destroyer stage! In the meantime just make sure everything that can be destroyed is put away where possible. Another option is to pay for a pet visitor to pop in the middle of the day to give the pup some interaction and to wear him out a bit. When I was studying I used to do this and the dogs were always SO happy as it breaks their day up a bit and they not alone for some long at a time.
