Hello!

I have always wanted to be able to train a cat to walk on a lead. I have had a couple over the years and all of them have seemed to rebel against it and refuse to move with a lead on. Interested to hear if there are any tricks to teaching them to enjoy it.

  • Firstly can I say that I LOVE that you are looking into a safe positive way of taking your cat out with you more! There are so many great Instagram pages which are dedicated on how to train your cat and they literally take there cats out with them everywhere! They have carry back packs which the cats can jump into whenever they want a rest/place to escape to aswell!
With regards to HOW I’m no pro but I do know that you need to go SLOW. First get a harness.. and get them used to wearing it in small bursts at home. Gradually building up and using treats to reward and make it positive. After a few days go out somewhere quiet and give a little practise explore. Always bring treats. From there you can build up slowly. If it’s ever not looking good just go back a step and take it super slow again. You will get there it just depends on the cat and the amount of time you are prepared to spend on it. Good luck

  • My biggest advice to other cat owners has been to try the trolley and carrier method. Having an area they feel safe in was a game changer. You can always just pull them along secured in the carrier to begin with, they way they still get to have an outdoor adventure

  • We rescued our deaf cat at 3 years old and she immediately took to her harness and lead. Its less about ‘walking’ them in a traditional walking a dog sense, but more allowing them to roam around and explore outside safely. Initially we would suit her up and place her cat carrier in a foldable beach trolley. We would pull her along and if she got nervous she could dive into the carrier. Before long her curiosity to explore outweighed any fears. She also realised very quickly that the only way she will go outside is on her lead. She now runs at the door in excitement when we pick up her harness

  • Great question. I’m interested to read everyone’s responses on here. I have 2 indoor cats and I feel a little guilty sometimes with them being stuck indoors. I’ve thought about a cat lead.

  • Ive probably only ever witnessed it 1-2 times over the years. Cats are notoriously independent. Im not sure how they train them but if its something you are absolutely keen on, perhaps desensitising them to the lead first at home and trying indoor walks might be a great start

  • It’s not something I have ever tried and I have to admit that I have never seen anyone walking their cat on a lead. This leads me to assume it is not popular or not easy. I saw someone walking a bunny like that once.
