Hello!

Do you substitute your dog’s bones for a meal or give it as an extra snack? We often give our dog large bones as a treat along side her usual meals. At the vets yesterday she had put on 4 kilos and we are thinking maybe the bone should replace her meal instead. She did get a very good report of the health of her teeth though.

  • Also worth mentioning.. I would love to give my dogs bones for often but I’m so nervous of having to keep an eye on them and having to take the bone away when it gets too small

  • I was actually really interested to find out the answer to this question so I looked it up and found that no they should not replace all meals but can replace the meal on that particular day. Bones are great for teeth and protein but apparently dogs need organ meat to get the rest of thier vitamins a, k etc

  • I should have said they are big meaty bones I am talking about lol. We give her a couple a week.

  • I wouldn’t think that bones have enough nutritional value to replace a balanced meal. Maybe give treats less often, just a few times a week if it’s a daily thing

  • I wouldnt think that having a bone should replace her meal. It gives great nutrients but definitely as an added bonus rather than the main course. I would perhaps just suggesting more walks or daily excercise, or cut down on the bones.
