Hello!

I live on acreage and have been considering getting a larger farm animal to graze in the yard to keep the grass down. Would anyone have recommendations, pros/cons of getting a cow, goat or sheep?

  • Cows can only chew the grass to a certain length. Sheep will totally destroy grass as they eat roots and all. Goats will eat grass as well as other weeds but they are notorious for escaping.

  • This is a really good question and something I have often wondered about. I know you can get minature goats nowadays. Whether they truly stay little I am not sure. After reading the great replies below I didn’t know that goats were escape artists as many said or that sheep could destroy any grass. Then to learn there are sheep that don’t need shearing. Very informative. I hope this all helps.

  • I don’t know much but I do know sheep require sheering. I have friends with goats at the are great at keeping grass low and they are so funny. They are literally like dogs.
I guess it depends on what you would like out of them. Cows might be less work?

  • I found out some more about goats. They are one of the only farm animals that can safely eat lantana so worth considering if that’s what you are needing them for. They are also exceptionally hard to keep in and clmb (ie on top of your car if it’s not garaged) so may bring some heartache if you dont have the area adequately fenced.

  • Cows need a lot of water and a lot of food so just something to consider in the number and access to water. We are looking into getting a handful of smaller breeds of cow and a couple of doorpa sheep (super chill and don’t require sheering).

  • Goats will eat almost everything so they’re good at clearing weeds and grass etc but some can be a nightmare to keep contained. I’d choose cows

  • Goats are a massive headache, such escape artists. Sheep will destroy any grass growing in your padfocks. I’d choose cows
