Hello!

So until recently my dogs has ALWAYS had collars on so that if by chance they got out and went wandering we could be contacted asap.
However I have seen so many people advising not to leave collars on all the time due to the choking hazard. They can get hooked or caught on something and be stuck there unable to move and get to water.
This has made me take them off but I wish there was another way to identify them easily! They are microchipped and thankfully don’t get out and wander but I’m just asking what do you do and have you seen alternatives to collar ids at all?

  • Oh that is so true!! Ive heard of dogs getting hooked onto some things and the owner not being home to help. They would be in so much distress too. Ive never put a collar on when they are inside as i feel it would be uncomfortable to constantly wear it. Your pet should be microchipped should they get lost, they can be scanned for ID.

  • We have always had collars on dogs and in my 60 + years have never had a incident. We did have a dog who got his coat stuck on a Rose bush when trying to scratch his back lol. Luckily we were home. I don’t know of alternatives but will be sticking to collars.

  • There are some options you can consider if you would prefer them to have ID in plain sight. You can get breakaway collars, just like what cats have, that are made for dogs. If your dog is a smaller breed a cat collar might work perfectly. You could ensure the 2 finger rule for a regular collar. 1 finger fitting is too tight, 3 is too loose. You could also look into them wearing a harness when outside with their id on it.
